Guest Worker Program Dead?

I've posted before about the perils of a guest worker program. Well, it looks like such a program may not happen.
Senate supporters of a guest worker program that would let illegal immigrants stay in the U.S. said yesterday they don't have enough votes to overcome objections from conservatives.

As negotiators worked on a compromise to let those who have been here the longest remain, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said a majority of the Senate supports a proposal backed by him and Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) to provide green cards to illegal immigrants after they've worked in the U.S. for six years.
I reluctantly side with McCain on this. And, if you haven't read about Anna and Roberto Salazar, here's why.

Corporations and private individuals need the help of these workers, the workers send money home and lift up their families in their homelands and it overcomes the biggest objection to these workers - assistance. If the workers are granted green cards they become visible. They can pay taxes which pay for government assistance such as schooling. They will no longer be "sponging off" America.

The McCain-Kennedy bill is a win-win situation. I'm sure most Americans see it as such and would readily endorse it.
