ARMY chief General Sir Richard Dannatt was at the centre of a political storm last night with claims of a "vicious and nasty smear campaign" against him after his hugely damaging comments about Iraq.

Senior ministers are privately calling for Britain's top soldier to be SACKED for calling for troops to pull out of Iraq "some time soon".

One Government source said: "It is not his job to criticise Government policy. He needs to get back in his box and shut up. His next mistake will be his last."
