Hiroshima, after the atomic bomb pictures
No, this is not a justification for bombing Iran. Its a plea to anyone reading this site to do anything in their power to prevent such weapons ever being used again.

my dad was on MP duty in Hiroshima after the bomb. His unit wasn't there immediately but within, I think, a month or so.
I wouldn't call him a progressive or even a liberal. And like a lot of vets, he didn't talk much about his war experiences in detail, but he frequently, for the rest of his life, said what you've said. It should never, under any circumstances, happen again anywhere. It was evident that even 30 plus years later, he still couldn't get his mind around it.
I've noticed many WWII vets won't/can't talk about the war. They can talk about their comrades or equipment, but not about much else.
The horror of it is probably beyond all understanding for those who weren't there.
I'm sorry your father had to carry such memories forever.
