African Union summit opens in Accra, Ghana
This just might turn out to be one of the biggest news stories of the year. We won't know for a while, but a united Africa could become a powerhouse very quickly.
Declaring himself a "soldier for Africa", Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi called on the continent on Saturday to unite under a single government so it could compete in a globalised world.

Admittedly, I'm not an Africa expert, but I suspect that the continent is just too large and too heterogeneous to pull off something like that. But some regional alliances could definitely be a possibility.
Agreed. One Africa is probably impossible (Ethiopia and Sudan will join an alliance?), but regional ones are likely. However, I see this happening not in the next couple years.
