Blog influence
So what can they do?
1. Bloggers can alert people to stories and items they might not learn from the MSM.
2. Bloggers constantly search other non-MSM news sources for stories of import the MSM deem insignificant. I don't think it necessary to provide examples.
3. Bloggers regularly call bullshit on stories which are nothing more than Bushci talking points.
4. The A-listers? They're concerned with political posturing and electability. Give me a break.
5. Today elections are determined by appearance and presentation. Do you think Abraham Lincoln would have a fucking chance of being elected president today? Just asking.
6. We have to convince the voters to consider substance. They need to focus on the issues and not the persona.
7. Does it matter if Bush is someone you want to have a beer with, especially knowing he's an alcoholic, or does it matter the person has a useful vision for American and a plan to get there?
We can help, but only so much.

From my experience #6 and #7 generally go hand in hand, with a little bit of #5 thrown in for good measure.
When you have voters stuck on a persona, believing their candidate is just like him, it is virtually impossible to change their mind when showing the substantive differences between candidates. (these were in-person as opposed to blogging)
Perhaps I didn't happen on the correct way to frame the substantive difference during last year's elections, which is why I saw what I saw. Perhaps it's because my little corner of the world is 53% (or was it 57%?) red. No matter, substance on the issues between candidates meant little.
Then let's add the twist that candidates are not always a bloggers (or a voter's) dream. It can be difficult talking up a candidate that you have little confidence in to begin with, but is viewed as being better than the other choice. Two recent examples are Kerry and Harold Ford Jr.
Its a difficult row to hoe. Hell, I liked Bill Clinton and was taken by his charming ways, but that isn't sufficient criteria for electing anyone. Nor was it why I backed him (I think).
I keep thinking Lincoln who had humor, but was damn ugly by most standards. JFK? Humor and presence, but he also had substance.
Then we get to Bush. Humor? That of a petulant 5 year old or worse. Presence? Hardly. Intelligence as had Lincoln, JFK or Clinton? Hahaha.
I repeat, hahaha. This guy has the mental capacity of a paper clip. And the Dems still won't kick his sorry ass out of office.

That's one of the strange things about Dubya.
"Say what you will about his policies, at least he's charming." No, he fucking well isn't.
"Say what you will about his policies, at least he's resolute and honest." No, he fucking well isn't.
Even his supposed *intangibles* are bullshit.
