Eight years after he seized power in a military coup and six years after making a deal with the US that enabled him to hold on to that power, General Pervez Musharraf is today poised to secure another five years as Pakistan's leader.

Spent many years programming, mostly mainframes. Been in business for myself, sky dived, scuba dived, practiced karate (until the broken ribs & finger), driven a sprint car (unreal). Want the US to be great again and worry it's impossible. I consider myself a moderate because I believe most Americans don't approve of torture, do want everyone to have health care, a pension and/or a job, privacy, freedom and NO WAR. Not too radical. I think one of the best possible outcomes, given our options at this point, would be a Bhutto-Musharraf power-sharing deal. This might, along with long-term US pressure, start laying the groundwork for the emergence of democracy in Pakistan.
Unfortunately, I don't think there are any other viable possibilities at this point, given that the major opposition parties (Sharif's PML and Bhutto's PPP) are tremendously corrupt and incompetent and can't be expected to govern. Democracy in Pakistan is going to take a long time, it seems.
I meant to say at the end, "Democracy in Pakistan is going to take a long time to take root, it seems."
I'm such a cynic. I don't think Musharraf is being honest.
It wouldn't surprise me if Bhutto is dead within a month.
Damn it, but I hate to be so negative. And I certainly hope I'm wrong.
