I seriously doubt he was innocent. Politics don't work like that. He knew exactly what the truth was.

In addition, if one of your neighbors turns you in for having sex with barnyard animals, it isn't true until proven.

Politicians are much like children. To wit: "No mommy, I didn't take any cookies". To be honest and forthright immediately just isn't in their nature. Nor mine for that matter. "No, honey, I didn't stop for a drink. I smell of alcohol because of Fred". Hahaha. Maybe they aren't so bad.
